genealogy.tv - got an offer on it

Hi, I was wondering what you all thought of genealogy.tv.

It is a $250/year premium name. I just got a $500 offer for it on SEDO, but I don't believe I would sell it for less than $6k.

I think it would have huge potential developed. How much would you all sell it for? I countered with $7200.00.

htmlindex 04-29-2008 02:30 AM

Personally, I think it's a good name. I would say it's worth in the Low $x,xxx range due to the renewals.

michaeldotcom 04-29-2008 03:17 AM

In the current market it should be worth easily low to mid $x,xxx (it would be worth even more if it wasn't premium).

It does indeed have a huge development potential, genealogy is very popular on the web, and it works very well with the .tv extension.

This name could actually be worth much more than $x,xxx in a few years time.

SearchingTV 04-29-2008 04:33 AM

Thank you both. The renewal is only $250, as far as premiums go I don't think it is too high. In anycase the guy never got back to me so I think I scared him off with my $7200 counter offer.

TheBulldog 04-29-2008 06:11 AM

Funny.......

I am in the middle of a huge genealogy project right now, both for people, and then a seperate site dedicated to all breeds of animals. Really, it is a huge script, eating my time, my life and eating into my scotch intake. The script I am working from allows media uploads like videos and what not, so hoping .tv will want it as well.

It is a large market, although I honestly am not sure what videos you would use for it, except for home movies. Which would be an awesome site to develop as well.

"Upload your home videos and link with your ancestors".

I would say actually it is worth way more developed then undeveloped. Undev'd. it is surely only good for low to mid $x,xxx to an end user with cash.

If it were me, I would get a site going. The script I am working from allows media uploads like videos and what not.

SearchingTV 04-29-2008 06:23 AM

well i just got a 3rd offer for $500 for it and then it went up to $1k. 3 offers in the last 10 days on it. Maybe when it gets higher I would send it to auction, but I still feel it is worth more than $5k in todays market and will go up to much more in a couple more years.

Len 04-29-2008 06:24 AM

Genealogy is big business! Most sites give you a little taster and then charge a fee for membership. Depends what you want for it but as Bulldog say's developed it could be a goldmine. Personally I would put it in the featured domains section on Sedo and see what kind of offers I get to give me a feel of what it is worth.

michaeldotcom 04-29-2008 06:44 AM

Genealogy is most definitely big business. Fully developed by the right company it could really be a goldmine indeed.

However I think you would struggle to get more than low $x,xxx from resellers in the current market.

I think it's a great name with a huge potential, but I also think that it would require actually quite a lot of investment and specialized staff to develop it to its full potential. It's not as easy as it seems to develop it.

If you want to get more than low $x,xxx, you probably will have to go after endusers. You could possibly contact some of the major genealogy sites on the web.

If you manage to find the right enduser and if they understand what .tv is all about, you could get a very nice sale.

Best of luck ! :)

TheBulldog 04-29-2008 06:49 AM

Len is right.

Dev'd sites are very lucrative. Even if you don't charge for general access, there is always a premium membership option. Not to mention ads.

SearchingTV 04-29-2008 07:24 AM

well the guy who made the offer canceled negotiations. This name will eventually sell for a very nice amount even undeveloped.

SearchingTV 04-30-2008 10:03 PM

it seems that one of the offers was canceled, but the one who offered $1k upt his bid to $2k. Still low for me, but at least it is a serious buyer.

Also got an offer for $500 for Denmark.tv, but that is obviously way too low.

Still things are looking up for .tv

space101 05-02-2008 01:41 AM

That's awesome your getting plenty of offers .tv is getting hotter

SearchingTV 05-04-2008 09:16 PM

Genealogy.tv is now officially on auction! The reserve has been met at $2750.00. I decided to take a chance and see if SEDO will be a good place to get the bids up. Does anyone know how I can feature the name on the home page?

virtuali 05-04-2008 09:35 PM

Goodluck!!

Hey Searching.. goodluck with your name.. I think you should get mid xxxx for this name... in regards to getting the auction featured sedo does not feature .TV domains.. dont ask me why... but they dont.. the best you would be able to do is get it featured in the "Featured Domain Section".

Cheers.

Ok, thanks. If anyone has any ideas to get more exposure for this auction please let me know.

If your domain is already on auction it will not appear in the "Featured Domain Section".
If you have a domain in there and you put it on auction then it is automatically withdrawn from that section. From this point the auction itself is your "Showcase".

TheBulldog 05-05-2008 05:29 AM

Go to Ancestry.com and see if they have forums. I will put it on a gen web that I frequent as well.

pretty much go to google and type genealogy forums.

Post it in those. I sincerely wish I had the cash because I would buy it for 5k if I could

Thanks BullDog and Len, I greatly appreciate it.

jeffoverman 05-05-2008 07:12 AM

congrats richard....

your one of the top .tv name holders here and it shows with your top sales this year.

cheers,

j

smashfactory 05-05-2008 07:22 AM

you have 5 days richard- it would not hurt to sit in google and pull up a bunch of major genealogy sites and drop them a note- let them know the name is on sedo auction, and will go to a new owner in just a few days, in case they want the chance to bid on this fine name :-)

Thanks Smash, I actually did that a couple of days ago.

I'm hoping Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com get into a bidding war. I'm sure they would both want the name.

Funny thing when you type in Genealogy.com from the UK you get redirected to Ancestry.co.uk - their sister site for the UK market. Oh the incestuous nature of genealogy and ancestry. Here is to hoping they want to be united with their dynamic .tv sibling

Best wishes for a sky high auction price. CarryOn

jeffoverman 05-06-2008 07:47 AM

richard,

one thing i just noticed and wanted see what the current price was that its at parked.com parked.

to show case this name and auction price you should change your nameservers to sedo and park it.

it is another way of drawing interested people and would show stats and price for this name.

besides, i believe your commission would be cheaper if you did this since your using sedo parking but i am not sure. i have only sold 2 .tv names.

one other note is this.your high profile names if your trying to flip you should have them parked at sedo...only do this if your names draw traffic and domainers like to see traffic on names. sure sedo parking revenues suck and there designs on parked pages but if this name has stats and monthly revenues and traffic that would be a benefit.

just something to consider richard

Thanks Jeff, I changed the name servers on it.

jeffoverman 05-06-2008 08:15 AM

i am not a sedo expert and a rookie on sedo as far as sales and etc...

but it would make more sense to do this??? maybe others can comment on this like is the commission cheaper if its parked at sedo vs having name parked outside of sedo but yet still taking bids on name?

makes sense to me park .tv names if your trying to unload and if names have traffic?? Maybe i am wrong on that as well?? sure you miss the parked revenue vs sedo parking clicks but shows the stats and traffic...again only do this if name brings traffic...Also it would allow people bid directly on your site vs people going to sedo....also some people may not of sedo for end users?

now with this and you changing name servers i am not sure if it will show current price right away??? also what about description when your name is in auction but you changed nameservers and now parked at sedo...can you still add a description like yearly fees and description and your sales pitch?

good luck richard
