I used a script from Folkstr that isnt too bad.

Comes with a few addons and is easy to customise using CSS.

The price is $30 for it though.

I woud suggest visiting www.sourceforge.net and type into the search box "social newtorking".

This simple query will return several open source scripts I have seen in there ;)

The best I have seen so far is Rocket Theme's Populus template. Joomla backend makes for easy administration and the design is pretty.
