Free Graphic Design S/W

Hi all, can anyone recommend free s/w so i can create my own design/advert
It is a design for the apple iPhone. I am a noob when it comes to design so go gentle on me please :)

I recommend GIMP also. Its comparable to Adobe Photoshop in my opinion.
