I've had some messages about the "0" and "4" thing so I should clarify. If you have a numeric domain that begins with these numbers DON'T panic. If it's an NNNN.com or NNN.com it's still a great name, those numbers at the beginning just *tend* to reduce reseller value, just like a "1" or "2" at the beginning *tend* to increase the value. If you have a nice combination of digits it might not matter at all; looks like 0360.com is up to over $1500 in USD at Sedo right now.

Umm... I agree with the first part but the US economy is not going to be back to normal very soon. What is surprising is that despite global economic meltdown, numeric domains are doing very, very well. It probably has to do with the fact that people are looking for safe growth investments and real estate is traditionally one of these, but nobody wants to touch it now. But internet real estate, on the other hand, is a very good bet since internet use is growing exponentially with users from asia and elsewhere just starting to come online in large numbers (and numeric domains are very popular in Asia).

Good analysis. I would add that among domain names, numerics are the very safest bet. What some people consider the weaknesses of numeric domains are clearly strengths right now and for any foreseeable future. In general, the traffic they get isn't as well targeted as for names like BostonCondos.com, but at the same time they are true generics, which work anywhere around the globe, so they don't depend on the strength of any one particular economy or industry. The are basically immune to fads, trends, and localized bubbles. Likewise, their value has never depended on PPC revenue, which was seen as a liability when PPC names were making a killing. Now though with PPC on the ropes people are turning back to inherent-value names. Finally, as more and more semi-generic words become liable to trademark challenges, the safety of un-trademarkable digits is ever more apparent.
