Too many duplicate links, google penalized?

Ok a number of months ago, I created a site to develop, which had a whole lot of duplicate links to another site of mine. Of course I was going to replace the links with proper external links, as I got more customers. I then decided to just dump the whole idea and now it's back to a plain white "nothing here" page.

Now the thing is I was close to top of Google ranks, before I did this and not long after my domain was almost inexistent. Which I can understand. Anyway, now I want to develop the domain, cause it's a short simple name to remember. However, I'm not sure now, if it's worth it - if google have banned or penalized me.

How does it work? I know John Chow got penalized by google for backlinks, but eventually will he be put back to the top google ranking? How long before he gets his ranking up?

How do you know for sure if you have been penelised?

If a site can get penalized it can also get unpenalized.

If a site can be blacklisted it can also come out of that blacklist.

If a site can go into sandbox then it can also come out of sandbox situation.

If and when John chow will start getting his ranks back depends on his own efforts and the links and references people make to his blog. No one can predict it.

To know for sure you have been penalized just put on some page on that site make 100 good backlinks and then search for your site with the "site:sitename.com" command.

You can also check it right now with the "site:sitename.com" command, you might just see your site indexed

I would say develop your domain name. Why are you thinking that it will not be worth it if google has penalized it. I have registered brand new domains. Got penalized with my own actions and have also come out from the penalty situations myself.

Plus you are yourself not sure if your site is penalized or not. So I think it is worth it to develop the domain name rather then just thinking something bad has happened to it.

ah great thanks for that info. Actually it is indexed in google when I type in "domainname.com", so good to know that it's not been panelized. However, it's funny my domain was at the top of google without typing in the "", prior to putting in multiple repeat links, and then all of a sudden it wasn't showing up at all. So I don't know what happened there?

Anyway, thanks for info

is it too paranoid to think that all the sites made from my IP address are now somehow banned by google?
once i started to play around with SEO a bit (making links from my own sites - only a couple here and there, and starting up a number of sites) my sites wouldn't get indexed (even with a site: check). Even some of my old, untouched ones have now disappeared from google's listings!
I'm even too paranoid to put links in my signature, for fear that google will see them as "artificial".
eek - any advice?

Change the server and the IP will change.

Make the new site on new server.

That is why I put some sites on some servers and others at different places.

Putting your site in your sig is not spamming. Put it. In fact it will help your sites.

How many is too many? Two duplicate links are fine, according to Matt Cutts.

Another way, instead of changing servers and/or hosting providers, most places let you request a block of IPs. I currently have 10 IPs on my box and thinking about getting more. Also this is just my theory... I think google is smart and probably knows if you are just seperating the IP by 1 number? like.. x.x.x.15 and then x.x.x.16 google probably concludes they might be on the same server? I have been trying to space my IPs out by a couple at least. Maybe I am paranoid too :P

from what i've read google likes to see links coming from different c-class ips, although others say it's a myth. my take on it is that you should be fine as long as you don't have a gazillion backlinks coming from just one ip, and no other backlinks.

Agreed Perfect way to explain all that $hit in just 2 or 3 lines. I was not able to find the words.

Thanks shockie. Rep added
