I look as this investment as an alternative to putting $5K into a mutual fund or buying some shares of a stock for a year. Except, I see this as a much more profitable and secure way of doing it.

So 800 domains may seem like a lot, but if you think about it, its only a measly $5,000 ...and when the prices double, it will only be a gain of $5,000 so I am wondering why the big boys don't just come in and buy the remaining 5,000 domains for $35K

Breast Cancer
the fact is that I have other hundreds of domains in other niches. This is still asort of gamble so I prefer to be careful throwing too many eggs in one basket (I wish I would have done it with LLLL.com when I had the chance to...I take a rather conservative approach to diversify risk...)

Gotta say I'm thinking about it too. I already bought a large chunk of the market and probably own about 2k of these now. Maybe it's that class on antitrust regulation from college but I have a knee-jerk reaction against owning too much of the market. Now how much is too much is another question. Domaining is sort of a side-hobby/investment thing for me, and I don't really want to spend all of my time managing 4-5k domains, even if it would probably be more profitable to own more. Can't say I'm not tempted though!

Below 5k?

I think we may have dropped below 5k. Using the latest list of available ones (5,826), I just scanned a minute ago and came up with only 4,968 left. Now, some may have dropped in the last few hours and I wouldn't have caught those in my scan.

Not at all, welcome to the party! NNNNN.com is a five digit number followed by .com. You are witnessing the vanishing of these domains. There are 100,000 total possibilities 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10. One company owns about 60% of them (all the US zip codes, like 90210.com etc.) and a week ago there were about 20,000 left. Since then there has been a buying frenzy and there are less than 5,000 left now. People are buying them for a number of reasons, (1) they get decent type-in traffic, meaning people type in numbers for all sorts of reasons and will end up on your website, which you can make money from in cash parking, (2) the Chinese love numbers and many developed number websites are big in China, 173.com sold for over $300,000 last week, (3) numbers represent words on cell phones and this is a developing market and (4) once all the NNNNN.com's are bought out it is expected they will rise in value. All the LLLL.com's (four letter domains) were bought out a few months ago, and there are a lot more of these (over 450,000 total) than NNNNN.com's. After the LLLL.com buyout, prices for those have gone up to more than $50-$60 even for non-premium (i.e. really bad) letters, like XJZQ.com. So there is a lot of money to be had by registering NNNNN.com's right now for only $7-$8 per site, they could be selling for double that or 10x that in a year or two easily.

On my blog I have a discussion of the future for NNNNN.com domains that you might want to read.

There is also a good discussion here

I also encourage you to read back at earlier posts in this thread, as there is a lot of good information and links regarding NNNNN.com's, as well as a stunning history of them all being bought out very fast.

And if you want to buy them, you better move fast, next week there probably won't be any you can register, you will have to pay inflated prices to those of us that have bought them already!
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=427946

I should add that there is a list of available (as of a few hours ago, another 1,000 have been taken since then) NNNNN.com's here

If you want to buy these in bulk you can cut and paste into godaddy's bulk search (or any other registrar that has bulk registration) and you should get a discount for buying a lot. I bulk registered by NNNNN.com's through godaddy and am using their cash parking service to make money on them now.

One company (MCHX) doesn't own all US zip code nnnnn.coms. I own some high median home price areas. Type-ins average less than 30 uniques per month per name since 2004.

Thanks for the info, has Marchex tried to buy the zip code domains from you? Any idea what yours are worth? What would you consider selling them for?

Yeah, it won't work for the UK, but Spain, Germany, Brazil, Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, and many other countries have 5-digit postal codes. See some of the lists I have posted at www.nnnnndomains.com for a sample. I think all the ones I posted have been taken, but there may be a few left and there are probably some left in the available numbers, I recommend going through the available numbers and typing them in to google maps if you are interested in seeing whether they are foreign postal codes or not.

One thing that is weird, and I think others have commented on it, is that Marchex owns the .net for all of the zip codes it owns as well as the .com. Why did they need the .net also? I guess to protect their sites and prevent someone else from developing a competing and better zip code site since they probably couldn't TM a number, that's all I can think of. Certainly an advantage of numerics, I don't think anyone's going to be able to get it from you in a trademark dispute.

There are actually a bunch of Chinese websites that are NNNNN.net, probably not as many as .cn but the Chinese use .net as well it seems.

Jamptap has a great updated graphic of the buyout. Check it out here.
