I prefer windows 2000ME but I'm using vista. Why you ask? Everything is crap when it first comes out. Take xbox 360s for example. Didn't everyone say the same thing about windows xp?
The only reason I upgraded from ME was so I could use an app that wouldn't run under ME. Still have ME on my original computer and think I'll skip Vista for a bit. (My brother just "upgraded" to Vista last night.. so far, he's still tweaking, etc. I'll see how he fares but probably won't upgrade until my next new computer)
Vista is a easy to use OS....but after a period of time it really does slow down the overall performance of a computer.
As a hobby, a friend and I put computers together for people that want an upgrade or new computer. We don't put vista on any more, not because it's hard to use or difficult in any way, in fact I think it is quite awesome, but because it will eventually bog down the system. We can't work out why....it just does.
I'm running a top line dual core system and my friend a quad core system and down grading from vista to xp has been like upgrading from a VW to a high end sports car, as far as speed performance is concerned.

When Microsoft made Windows XP, I saw a screenshot of it and thought, "Wow, they finally made an OS for little kiddies, what with all those pretty, vibrant blues and greens 'n all!"
The older "block" style of windows that hung around since Windows 95 is seriously outdated. I prefer Vista for its usability. Just disable UAC and don't download anything weird, and you're good.
But, I do have Windows 98 running on a Virtual PC for legacy purposes. While Windows isn't what I'd expect from such a large company, it sure beats XP. I hated XP. It was totally unstable, and slow. I hated the "pretty" interfaces. I hated how effects had to be forced in order to occur. (It wasn't as "natural" as with Vista or a Mac).
XP was annoying. Vista is a lot more "organized" than XP. I prefer simplicity and organization to, well, XP. I just wish Vista had a "smart people" mode that would let me do what I want to do, like delete a file when I order it to delete one! Otherwise, fewer complaints than XP.
