.in seems to be very popular with the domainers.
I checked the actual websites of the reported Indian domains sale in the past few years.
Most of them are still parked or does not resolve to a website .
probably not. just my contribution to the list of big companies having their either .in or .co.in sites. As to question of matter, IMO .ins have some preference.
My experience shows that it is often hard to say whether .ins or .co.ins are worth more. Probably we should distinguish two things. From the point of view of domain market related to quality/brandability of name (end user) IMO .ins are preferred (available sales data). From the point of view of type-in traffic domains market (people living in India - and this is popularity of the name/extension as well), it looks sometimes/often that they prefer .co.ins rather than .ins (I made such guesses registering both keyword.in and keyword.co.in). Sometimes .co.ins performed better. Therefore I guess many people defend .co.in - they see more type-in traffic to their .co.ins. But it is not the value of the name from the point of view of end user if he is not aware of traffic details etc.
So, while there are many factors affecting the whole picture (developed indian sites in gtld'ss or xxx.in's, foreigners which are probably not aware of .co.in, org.in etc.) and making it hard to clearly choose either .in or .co.in, generally speaking, IMO .in's are at least a bit preferred.
BTW, seriously, it is very interesting to see which extension big companies prefer more. I guess Google engineers or AOL engineers made big analysis to decide what extension their website will be on. And because we clearly see split decision (in whos favour?) it shows that probably there is no winner there yet.
The more the domain industry gets negative hits(whether its stopping artibrage, snowe bill etc, taking longer to make sales), the more i run to traffic. Thats an intangible metric in this industry. when i search LLL.co.in and the .in, for many, i see the .co.in traffic is more. i agree .co.in willprobably remain a bit inferior to .in, but as i said, what people desire and envision are often different from the market realities-like the fact that the .in promo is over, and people are finding it harder to justify $14 for a TLD that realy doesn't justify its price(if .com is $7,i think you should be the s***if you're reg fee is $14). well just MHO....

3 months back when this thread was started, .in was looking heavier with the opinions... see the difference now going thru all the posts.......................
Guys... I have read quite a bit of threads while here at namepros....
I have to say, this has been the most fun read for me. I have learned so much, and it was very interesting. Thanks everyone! I will be following this thread closely.
Most of the time, its really about the traffic. Traffic is great.
.co.ins often get more traffic than the corresponding .in. I keep seeing it over and and over. ANy name that gets traffic and revenue in a year, irrespective of TLD, is a marketable name. Traffic just keeps me afloat in this indsutry........

Youtube recently launched YouTube India.
Although, both .co.in & .in version redirects to in.Youtube.com ,
the online media reporting has been mixed about the use of domains.
But, most online version of Print media (Hindu, EconomicTimes, HindustanTimes) has been reporting it as launch of Youtube.co.in .
