Agree with Jed K, the term should be 越南.

Your term does translate to Vietnam in a way, but really means 'east creek' as in 东溪小学 (east creek elementary school) or something related to brooks, creeks, or maybe even small rivers. Not really familiar with the term, but I can understand the confusion.
