IDN Inquiry (Malaysia, Indonesia and??)

Hi guys,

I am very new to IDN domain field, after reading a few articles from the internet as well as the forum I still do not get the whole IDN concept. Does IDN only includes those domain that contain characters other than A,B,C,D... and so on? such as Chinese, korean and Japanese character?
Or does it also include domain name in like for example Spanish which uses A,B,C,D.. as their characters for their domain?

An example here is recently I bought a new IDN ofisial.com (Official in english) and ofisial is used in Malaysia, Indonesia as well as singapore and I know some other countries use it too. Can this domain be counted as IDN?

Thanks!

Hi,

An IDN is a domain that allows for the use of other characters aside from ASCII (0-9, A-Z) in it. That includes Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, etc., as well as latin-based languages that use accents, umlauts, etc. (like the domain CancúnHotel.com in my sig).

The domain you listed as an example is not an IDN, but simply an ASCII domain in a language other than English. IDNs, while displaying correctly in unicode, are registered using something called "punycode," which looks like "xn--" followed by a string of numbers and letters.

I hope this helps, and feel free to PM me if you need further resources.

So, what do I type in the address bar to go to your cancun site? And what do I see in the address bar when I reach your cancun site?

You type CancúnHotel.com - exactly as you see it. As long as you have IE7, Firefox, Opera or Safari (basically anything but IE6) as your browser, you should have no problems.

You can follow this link to see what you see when you get there:

CancúnHotel.com

And in the address bar, you will see the same: CancúnHotel.com (actually cancúnhotel.com, with lowercase, or course).

I use FireFox and I see this in my address bar: http://www.xn--cancnhotel-qdb.com/

I use IE7 and I see http://www.xn--cancnhotel-qdb.com/ with the message "This web address contains letters or symbols that cannot be displayed with the current language settings. Click here for options.."

Then your language settings in your browser aren't set for displaying Spanish.

Tools > Internet Options > Languages > Add Spanish (just a further elaboration).
