Thanks for your perfect intro to domaining! Great for someone
like me. My question...what's the low-down on hyphenated
domains? You see alot of them out there; Do they sort of make
their own market or what?
Great stuff! I'd have to say even before reading your post here, I felt I'm on the same page as you as... even if I am still a fairly new domainer myself.
Thanks for the great read. I'm adding your blog to my bookmark of course.
My question is, how do you feel about 3 things a domainer can do with his/her domains? Parking, Selling immediately and Developing...
Which ones do you do? What are the pros and cons of each? And which are more profitable in the long run?
I'm developing 3 domains at the moment but I'm also looking to sell them immediately for an attracive price if there are takers...
I'm very much against parking and often don't even bother parking many of the domains I own. So selling + developing are the way to go!
I do alot more selling than developing currently, although I'm hoping to change that in the near future. Development is costly not only financially, but also in terms of time (hours that could have been used selling domains).
Hands down the most profitable is development if you have a really good idea... Facebook alone is probably worth more than every domainer on here's domains combined!
I've been working on my first major development for the past 4 months now. Site design is easy, it's the content which really takes alot of time to come up with. Plenty of great webmasters in developing countries can be outsourced for $5-$10/hour, but it takes more than good looks for a site to really take off. Hiring (good) content writers is extremely expensive and most domainers (who aren't necessarily good content writers) are stuck doing this themselves -- probably explains why we see so few developed domains.
We need not look further than the domain industry to see some very successful companies that were once "little guys" like us: Sedo, Afternic, Godaddy, or how about eBay?
The odds are stacked against anyone trying to replicate that level of success, but one thing I can say for certain is that a heck of alot more people have become millionaires from developed sites than from parking revenue.
I'm going to be updating the guide a fair bit over the next week or so, so please do check back then and there should be alot more information explaining premium letters and what various terms like CVCVC, LLLL, AABB (and about 20+ more!) mean.
Excellent article. I tried to give you a rep point for it, and this is what NP told me: "We're glad that you're fond of this member, but please give some rep points to some other members before giving it to Reece again."
I have just started buying domains for about a month. I have 40 now - all parked. I will now be much more careful and calculated in buying domains after reading this thread amongst others on Namepros.
I will probably develop a couple of domains with a view to getting adwords on them. Can you recommend a host? I have heard of a couple of free hosting services.
I also have a couple of questions:
How can i make a judgment on whether my parked domains are getting better than average revenue? Is there anywhere to make comparisons of the clicks/PPC/RPM of sold domains?
My average is:
TotalViews - 214
TotalClicks - 30
CTR - 14.02%
AveragePPC - £ 0.14
RPM - £ 20.03
Also how much traffic is generated to a .com from people just typing words into the address bar of a browser and why do the browsers always by default take you to the .com name? Why not the local tld? (when a UK user types londonhotels the browser takes him to londonhotels.com not londonhotels.co.uk). Do you think browsers in the future do the same?
I will still continue to read Namepros to find answers, but I might as well ask too.
A definite help to newbies like me! I should have considered checking out the forums prior to buying several domain names. I still have a lot to ask but rather than filling up the forums with questions that may have already been addressed somewhere, I would read more of the other forums as well. Way to go!
