I did a post on Craigslist about a month ago, by now I'm sure the post is buried under piles of other stuff, one thing I was not able to do is create a link for my site, is this normal? Did everyone pretty much experience the same thing?
Thanks
Chas.

wow alot of work _ i suggest making sites people are naturally drawn to - SEO like crazy and offer incentives for others to promote it! Less work for you - less spam on the net!
remember if u build it, they may come, then leave - If you build it great - they will tell everyone they know!
I've been working on this for a while now, and here's really what I've seen with all the case studies I've done and read:
1. Good content.
2. Good linking.
3. High authority.
We actually provide SEO services centered around these as well. Most of the sites we've done this with have ended up in the top 2 pages of Google within a week. The idea is to build user-driven content and then combine it with Google driven linking.
Dont worry about your post being buried, it is still being indexed by search engines , and that is what you really seek for when you go and post info about your website on craigslist.

Simple, does that really work, i mean does that search engine listing convert to traffic? I expect it depends on the keywords but do you have an example?
1. Join your local chamber of commerce. They will link to you. That gives you a valuable link (for SEO), traffic from the CC site itself, and the CC's own keyword positioning on Google, etc.
2. Donate to a charity that will list you on their website.
Do the following: (Just posted this in another thread)
Directory Submissions - targeted links at high PR directories
Blog and Forum participation - to high PR and frequently crawled sites
Social Bookmarking
Press Releases
Classified Ads
Article Marketing - submit to high PR directories, could also serve as link baits
Link Exchange - with relevant and authority sites
Link Baits - for organic linking
Etc. etc.
Been doing them lately and it worked wonders SEO and traffic wise
Does submitting articles to article directories still work? Social media marketing is very effective in bringing traffic to a site. You have to earn their trust.
EzineArticles.com is Numero Uno followed by GO Articles.
Squidoo 'lenses' are also likely to rank well (link back to your main site) though they seem to have been overtaken by HubPages (owned by Google).
If you have updating content on your site, get an RSS feed of your content. Or set up a blog on your topic with an RSS feed for content, put a link back to your main site. Or incoporate the feed into the main site.
Make sure you have a Google site map. Usual SEO stuff previously mentioned.
Give something away free on your site - free report, software etc. Obviously matching your niche. Advertise it in those "free stuff" forums which you'll find via Google.
These are all indeed good ways to promote a website...but Deanmc...articles is a good way to gather up a traffic..provided the article is well written and really catches the eye of the user. The article should be linked to your site and cannot be a duplicate of any other present online already.....
well you can get traffic by going inside big communities and usinng their ways to interact each other
i have used orkut
and get alot of traffic fom it ...hope you are aware of this community as welll
I agree with everything on your list. I would stress email marketing especially if you are trying to sell anything. Email is a great way to get your word out there and get a significant ROI for your investment. If you don't have your own in house list, I would suggest email list rental from an interactive agency like Viralytics Media or Avenue A.
