Its sad really... My fav place to post/discuss was in the .mobi section here at NP's. Now its no fun and I stay away from it (too much negativity).

WHile I do like a good discussion about .mobi (good and bad) some people just hang out to put it down (but thats just stating what sooo many people have already said). ANyways...

Sorry to change the subject but I just had to vent for once. Continue reading ...

Looks like (of the domains that the "Reserve prices" have been met) Loans.mobi, Download.mobi, Insurance.mobi, Webcam.mobi, and Bank.mobi round out the Top 5 (with total cumulative current bids of $51,250 IMHO.
Does anyone believe Loans.mobi won't be the highest auction at the end?

I think download is the only one that has a chance of exceeding loans.mobi, and that's assuming either BOFA isn't bidding on it (doubtful) or Cnet is bidding on download.com.

Man, I would looove to see Bank of America acquire -and- develop -and- promote Loans.mobi (since they already do same for Loans.com) !

Agree that Download.mobi should be a Top 2 domain auction, as well ... and potentially #1 if Cnet or other End users become involved.

I don't think you can expect the world, even keyword .net's are usually only wourth 3-4% of the same .com. If keyword .mobi's were trading at 1% of the .com's value that would be many times higher than any other new tld.

... And the percentage game is extremely dangerous to begin with, it fails to factor so much, including whether the buyer of .com got a good price, whether the seller needed to sell, how the market was doing that year, whether that industry, service or product has changed in popularity, whether a similar name is kicking but now, whether internet use in that region has grown... the list goes on.
Good points to remember IMHO (not least "...the list goes on"), especially if we don't want to confuse the very people we are hoping would come in and broaden the ownership base.

Well Said. I made a thread awhile back about if .mobi became .com, how much everyone would be worth according to estibot. Many people were worth hundreds of thousands or even millions.

Now, back to reality... 1% of millions is tens of thousands. According to estibot, I'm worth about $15 million should my .mobis have been .coms. And 1% of that is.. (drumroll) $150,000 So about a 700% ROI. Not bad, not bad at all
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=378329

** I'm perfectly well aware that estibot isn't always 100% accurate, just elucidating that .mobis will turn out to be an exceptional investment for many of us, even if they do top out at 1% of .coms value.

the auction is nice, but the % to com discussion has become interesting again, too.

i think there is a big aspect that we didn't touch upon, probably did before. Its the idea of stigma. if .mobi is seen by a new generation(s) of users, be it younger/working/shopping or poorer regional demographics, it has the potential to be from a new era of tld's; perceived as useful and giving repeat positive user experience as an extension, then it may become the actually cool thing to do. So not only may it not have an uphill battle as second best stigma, but may be actually sought after (as .tv may be).

I wasn't going to share the following thought publicly so that Jeff cannot refer to it mockingly at the end of the auction, but now that 'cool' and 'useful' have been mentioned in the same sentence I can't resist taking the risk. So I was in a what-if mode the other day and had my mobi-rosyTM spectacles on, so I thought what if:
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=378329

[mobi-rosyTM mode] What if an eterprising Harvard dropout (Harvard optional, droput essential) were to get a modest inheritance and buy say rent.mobi via Sedo next week?

Yes he would be competing head-to-head with eBay as owner of the .com, but so what?

Ebay is a very innovative and fast moving company for its size, but if the proverbial dropout has a bit of marketing/PR flare, he can easily cast himself in the role of a Digg-able cool David taking on a stodgy corporate Goliath that came to prominence some time in the previous century.

And what about 'usefulness'? Can we say GPS?

He doesn't need to be a technical genius to combine a clone of the best-of-breed real estate rental interface out there today (not even sure if that's rent.com or not) with a decent GPS system that automatically shows pictures/virtual tours/key info/walking times to only the exact type of apartment you want when you are within walking distance from it (all user definable variables of course, but with sensible defaults so that the 'impatient generation' doesn't have to bother thinking about options and whatever).

[rem:mobi-rosy mode still ON] If that happens (coupled with absence of the typical show-stopping startup errors of course), which service would you say current undergrads are more likely to use in a couple of years when they go to the big city to find a job and an apartment (not necessarily in that order) even if they did have access to a desktop?

Would they rather spend their precious time clicking on maps and trying to imagine what it must be to live there, or would they perhaps prefer to stroll through the most recommended/trendiest area they can afford (and just use that mobi thing that’s been on the front page of Digg like forever)?

It can happen.[/mobi-rosyTM mode]

Jeff, after you finish reading this you will remember nothing. You’ll feel relaxed and be left with only the satisfaction of another mobi-rosyTM post having been appropriately dealt with already.

I'm thinking that in a few years they will be on par with the other non .com tld's, or maybe even higher if everyone ends up using .mobi.

I'm worth about $15,000 right now if I were to liquidate everything. Not too bad over 200% ROI already. Multiply that by a factor of 10 or 20 if the general public starts using .mobi.
