Even me -- A .mobi skeptic, is prepared to admit that current technology IS NOWHERE NEAR CAPABLE of providing an enjoyable mobile internet experience. Even my pda -- which was ordered wholesale from Japan, ended up costing me near $1000USD by the time it was outfitted to make it into a ".mobi killer". First of all, it doesn't fit in dress pants... Second of all, it's still only 640x480 resolution making certain pages a pain to read. Third -- It costs 1000USD and weight 2/3 of a pound!!!
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=330210

Make this device 1/4 it's size, 1/4 it's price, and 4 times the resolution, and YES, you do have a ".mobi killer" IMO. That's at least 5 years away from now IMO.

I have no clue what this Google announcement means for .mobi. If it is confirmed to be true, and Google not only makes a Google.mobi, but a "mobile adsense", then yes, I'd say some people are in for a hefty payday.

By the time a tech advanced phone does become mainstream, .mobi will just amend it's protocol to address it.

There's this thing called a steering committee which looks at flow charts and stuff and makes decisions. I think they have it handled...

The important thing to remember about the .mobi coding standards even today is that the standards apply to the default presentation. I don't see a problem with using auto detect to move a visitor to more robust site content. But if the redirect does not function then the default presentation should be standards compliant.

A sign of that Google.mobi is coming?
Google is testing Voice Recognition Search and text Product Search for mobile phones. Both are in LIVE beta RIGHT NOW!! I imagine, with Goog's new Universal Search format, announced a couple days ago they are meshing the two. Google's goal is to have a Universal Voice Search platform that will not only merge topical results (maps, video, timelines, etc) but also be able to voice recognize/translate the worlds major languages.

Wall Street Journal
Google Targets Voice Searches

(Edit: ooops, forgot the link: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1176...us_marketplace )
Google Inc. appears headed for a battle with Microsoft Corp. and others over voice-based search technology, which can take the place of conventional directory assistance and offer new benefits for mobile-phone users.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=330210

The Web-search titan, based in Mountain View, Calif., released a free experimental service last week called Google Voice Local Search. It allows users to dial a number -- 1-800-GOOG-411 -- and search for businesses in specific cities, using technology that recognizes what callers say.
-------------------------

How to use Product Search for Mobile:
To use Product Search on your mobile phone, just point your phone's browser* to http://google.com/products/wml Enter your search term in the box and select 'Search' Use your phone's keypad arrows to scroll through the results. Sort by price or best match or conduct a new search by using the links at the bottom of the search results.
* Available on phones that support WML (WAP 1.2). Check the owner's manual of your phone to verify whether or not your phone supports WML.

Man on subway using voice search whispers "sex" into his phone. The system has trouble understanding him and asks him to say his search term louder. He glances around and speaks a bit louder, "Sex", but it wasn't enough. Frustrated, he speaks firmly into his phone, "SEX"! He feels some eyes looking in his direction as he waits for the results on his phone. Moments later he gets 10 links for socks. Dismayed he begins to type...

lol, I've seen something like that in a movie. Seriously, Voice Recognition (VR)firms often respond to this type of 'criticism' by going head-to-head with any mobile device texter/typist. Not only does mobile VR blow them away but the typist usually has many more 'typos' than the VR software.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=330210

Besides, V2T (Voice-to-Text) VR, like Microsoft's TellMe-mobile... displays the spoken words as text on screen... so when your man on the subway whispers "SEX" he'll be able to see if the system heard "SEX" or "Socks".

And with the newer phones coming out are capable of viewing .com, its all over for .mobi

Even the smaller screened cell phones are getting phazed out for t-mobile dash, blackberry's, palm treos etc. I wont even bring up the iphone and others similar to it. This will get ugly I believe in due time for .mobi lovers. Sadly, the fact is they are becoming harder to sell to. Call it a bubble burst or slow down or whatever, I think theres a bigger reason behind it. People are wising up to whats available technology wise and are having their doughts as well.

Just my opinion folks, proceed with caution.
YAWN... sorry. I don't see any doom & gloom on the horizon.

I'm still buying and have no desire to sell. I am excited to develop my .mobis. From my POV and from my development mindset, posts like yours carry no weight whatsoever...

"bubble burst"??? have you tried buying a QUALITY .mobi generic domain lately? a true category killer? I don't see any decline in prices.

everyone should proceed with caution no matter what they invest in.

there is no guarantee that .mobi will fail or succeed... only invest what you can afford to lose. common sense folks.

for .mobi owners: keep in mind, some of the people who are trying to instill fear, foster doubt, etc... may also be the ones waiting to buy your domains cheap.

think for yourself. do your own research. ask your own questions. search for your own answers. don't let others whisper in your ear. there are too many people in life that miss out on opportunities and need to make others feel bad so that they feel good about themselves and their decisions.

and one more time for emphasis... DO NOT INVEST MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE... whether it be .mobi, .tv, .com, real estate, stocks, relationships, etc...
