Transfers:

What is an EPP auth code?

There are two methods of transferring domains from one registrar to another depending on the database security method of the TLD registry. One of them is EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol). Most domains other than com/net/cc use the newer EPP method. With EPP domains, an auth(orization) code is assigned to the domain for security. in order to successfully transfer a domain, you must log into your account to get the auth code and use it in the transfer request. This keeps someone from being able to transfer a domain from your account without access to your account. The older non-EPP method does not use auth codes, but a method of "locking" domains in your account has been devised. Eventually, all domains under the authority of ICANN are expected to migrate to the EPP method. Some registrars also allow locking of EPP domains for added transfer security, and some don't offer locking on EPP domains since they are secure with the auth code. EPP allows a more automated, yet secure process of making reigstrar transfers

that site, abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwx yzabcdefghijk.com, can also be reached via http://tinyurl.com/3xsep.

i registered for an email there, and this site's "enter email here" box wouldn't accept so long an email address. it also separates it for some reason.

Tuvalu retains a 20% share in dotTV, which contributes significantly to their GDP in addition to their other chief exports: stamps, copra, fish products, and phone sex.

Sometimes, ya just gotta wonder.
Tuvala, I was under the impression it was television! um tx

Error #1: It's Tuvalu, NOT Tuvala
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=3282

Error #2: If you see someone offering two-letter TLDs claiming they stand for "television" or "web site" or "medical doctor" or "Los Angeles" go the the IANA web site to check what those two letters REALLY stand for.

How long has .ws been around and will it last?

I established a .ws domain recently and I wondered if it will last. Does anyone have any experience with .ws domain names?
Thanks

You cannot use whois privacy on .us domains. It is against the .us TOS (probably because it would hide a nexus violators from possible nexus disputes)

This is valid not for .us only. Some other exotic ccTLDs have this restriction as well.

Can i get domains for free?

yes, under certain terms.
some sites give you free domains if you use their services.
usually they restrict the type of domain you can get for free(ie: .com, .co.uk, .org etc.)

www.namepros.com allow you to register .com, .info, .org and .mobi domains for free with points earned on their forum.

Any Scams?

Are there any well known (to the experts, that is ) scams that have been attempted on newcomers to domain registration?

this question might be repeated

I know this question might have been asked before, but here goes.

How can we assess the value of a certain domain?

I found domains with 0 pagerank listed on godaddy for $25,000 and even $49000. What was that about?

I am sure domain selling isnt so simple, right ?

If I acquire a new domain today, how can I know when its value has increased?

How much should I set its sale price at?

First thanks for having such an useful faq. Now what is up with all the spam comments at namefaqs.com? =)

Here are my questions...
- How important is it having or paying for privacy on a domain name?
- What can Whois privacy for a domain name do besides stopping email spam?
- What is the minimum information do you legally need to put on Whois?

thanks
chris

To my it's worth nothing to less than nothing. In the registerfly mess, I thought I had all my names out months ago. I just found out I had about 6 names there that don't show in my account and don't show me as owner, but show registerfly protection service (which I didn't select, by the way) and are still enom based. Because RF won't respond, I can't get them back in my account or my name via RF. Because they don't have my name, enom won't do anything unless RF verifies I'm the rightful owner. I'm probably screwed, unless I can convince someone they are mine. Still trying though...

Make it hard to prove you really own them! Make it more difficult for a potential buyer to contact you. Make it more likley you miss a renewal notice not forwarded from the protection service to your REAL email address.

Anyone in a dispute must be able to contact you either with accurate whois contacts or a proxy service that can forward them. .us is more strict since they don't allow proxy addresses.

What do you think of using your own name in url title
or should it all be within the keywords of your site?

q: Can i get the rights to use a domain for more than 10 years ?

a: In general terms, No.

Each ccTLD or sLTD have his owns limits of max and min register time. As a rule of thumb, many times you can think many registrars have a limit of 9 or 10 years, then is worth give yourself a chance for the case of you want later change registrars. Pay 5 years in advance look good if your domain is valuable for you, 8 years if you have more time and chance to change registrars, and 9 if you want time and are happy with your registrar.

You have the risk some bad registrars really register for 1 year, and later renew. If the registrar do not register by many years, you can lose money.

Some registrars, as Netsol, allow you pay for 99 years in advance. Reseller club have a limit of 3285 days in advance, and if you transfer with them a domain with 3286 the domay stay here, but dont show in the renewals if have nore than 3285 days. You can enter in other places, too.
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=3282

Always check with an external whois, as whois.net , the time you get really in the whois.
