tested several words typed into the address bar on safari ....all defaulted to dotcom

the word loan typed into safari address bar went to loan.com

the word "loan" typed into google search bar on safari went to a google results with eloan.com as the top free result

the word "loan" typed into firefox 2.0 returned a google results page with eloan.com as the top free result
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/284684-good-interview-with-pinky.html

the word "loan" typed into the google search bar on firefox 2.0 returned a google results page with a wikipedia site for the word "loan" as the top result

i have used about 20 browsers in my life and to the best of my memory, most of them defaulted to dot com ... however, i think that has been slowly changing in favor of more democratic results

i could easily envision a lawsuit over browser defaults some day, this is not a minor issue

Thumbs up .mobi deafaulting thoughts and the future

Ok

I am going to be modest with you guys and explain:
I have been reading old posts since .mobi was launched and it has enlightened me:

"dot mobi" is solely designed for on the move market, not very long WebPages like .com on pda's, therefore it serves a different purpose, different market in a certain sense.

Now think about it, that means only pages involving certain categories are guaranteed to do well:

travel, news headlines, sports scores, games, betting, timetables, ticket purchase etc

As far as the rest of the .mobi categories are concerned:
Only time will tell,

.mobi defaulting:
As i said in an earlier post:
Neil Edwards says, there is no problem with .com as being used instead of .mobi for mobile devices, but .com has some licensing restrictions,
I don’t know if this is true, but that’s what he said!!!!!

Can someone check on this and confirm with there domaining guru knowledge please.

So this license restriction on .com can be the only thing helping .mobi becoming the default extension for mobiles/ cell devices.

U guys are concentrating on the right thing about defaulting, but also keep an eye on, with open mind :
.mobi has done very cheap advertising so far, and has everything has come from .mobi itself.

They are letting the consumer drive it, so whatever the next big change we will see, weather its defaulting of .mobi, has to be interesting.

I think personally its too early for the defaulting to take place.

My Thoughts:

.mobi may be building a case to be the defaulting domain, by getting acceptance as the web std domain for mobiles from consumer interest and acceptance.

also .mobi is waiting for other mobile devices like iphone, and providers (carriers) to bring out there products and services first and follow them or use them, and there mistakes (improving on these mistakes) to give there name the big status.

But on thee other hand its possible and more likely .mobi may well want to be on top before fixed rate broadband for mobile devices kicks of in a big way, and its common knowledge and cheap for the average consumer(part of the std mobile phone package)

Please share your thoughts on your opinion of .mobi so far, and why there is no adverting promoting from the carriers.

.mobi simply says as you know: we are working with our carriers, lol,
I wish they would work faster, i know .mobi has picked up really fast, but that’s just the market now, trends are like that!

We also need to list the restrictions that .mobi poses and the advantages in a thread, and also more importantly how .mobi can help the current mobile based web environmental issues/limitations!!
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=284684

Though limitations may be wiped out by 2008

This is a thread we need: ".mobi intentions/analysis" on here,

Thanks

i admit that i am somewhat obssessed with this idea of browser defaults, i may well be blowing it out my butt nevertheless i think it's a critical issue

do this: either using your mobile phone web browser or, if you don't have a mobile phone like me, go to : http://www.operamini.com/features/simulator/ and launch the opera phone browser simulator (which works great)

enter "accuweather.com", when you get to their page enter your zipcode and you will be given a nifty set of graphics showing what the weather is in your area (make sure to scroll down)

remember, you are on a dot com website, specifically designed to be accessed from mobile phones

on your regular pc go to accuweather.com and look on the right side of the page where they are selling you "accuweather for your phone"

there is nothing magic about mobi (i am not a basher, i own 20 sites and would like to buy more) anyone with dot com site can do mobi

i believe most people will pull out their phones and launch their browsers and when they want to go somewhere they will probably type "weather" "hot sex" "puppies" or whatever in the browser address bar, this may give a set of google results, it may default to dot com website, it may default to a dot mobi website
????: NamePros.com http://www.namepros.com/showthread.php?t=284684

if it defaults to a google search, google may or may not give mobi sites preference in the results, i.e higher ranking

i can only assume that since: Ericsson, Google, GSM Association, Hutchison, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, T-Mobile, Telefónica Móviles, TIM and Vodafone.

are all prime movers in dot mobi, dot mobi will be given preference on phones in both searching and browsing bar entry

but it certainly doesn't mean that dot com guys can't get in there as well

and trust me if it takes off and the dot com guys don't have the matching mobi name then they will be pushing very hard to get dot com in front of you on your phone somehow

browser defaults and search defaults are critical to this whole issue, my 2 cents and now i will try to shut up about browser defaults for at least a week
