I did not say that the .com is blocked or any other tld blocked just the default setting on the phones browsers is set to .mobi so the users just goes surfing and .mobi content is delivered out the box.

No one is going to default to .mobi unless they feel that .mobi represents the internet for mobile devices and it won't happen with people parking their names thats for sure. It needs to be purposeful for the end-user.

Thanks for the clarification - and while I don't wish at all to speak for Tippy, I think we're all talking the same animal here in this context ("blocking" (.com) / "default" (.mobi)) - but cell phone browsers, IMHO, simply are not going to default in this matter ... it is not at all CONSISTENT with the freedom that I expressed above of a true "Mobile Web"!

Honestly, and just my humble two sense.

True, but it won't happen regardless (see above)!

While i do tend to agree, and this thought seems logical, i wont go as far to say "it wont happen".. thats a pretty bold statement.. even during the namepros chat with pinky brand he said they were ACTIVELY working to make this happen. I was shocked, because i didnt think that is something theyd even consider... here you go:

Pinky-Brand: Yes one of the most common questions that I get is about defaulting to .MOBI so you don't have to type .MOBI on the phone.
Pinky-Brand: The answer is we are working with our investors, the browser folks and the operating system folks towards that goal.
Pinky-Brand: We are actively doing this.
Pinky-Brand: Keep in mind that there are 7+ mobile browsers and 7+ mobile operating systems out there...it is not quite as easy as in the PC world.

Whats without doubt is that we can configure our sites to recognise browsers at the firewall and in turn show users whatever page we want. So any site, in any extension, can take their 2.9 gillion mobile users and direct them to their mobi.anydomain or anydomain.info/mobi page... This is the greatest threat to the extension.

Aside from that

But, in the same way that it's too early for them to proclaim success, it's also much-much too early for anybody else to proclaim failure. It takes time for an new extension to become recognized, and get some legs under it.

The bottom line - Throw out the claims from the overly-hyped mobi fans, and throw out the claims from the overly-negative mobi haters. The real deal is what's left over in the middle... a new extension with a strong start, great potential, and a long way to go before any of us truly know it's fate.
This is the wisest words you'll read on the subject.

And personally im getting pretty tired of reading, not the over hype, but more the venomous reaction were now seeing being directed at anyone casting even the remotest doubt over the extension from the pro.mobi mob.

that isnt even logical.

if this were the case .TV would be DOOMED because there are so many other extentions to choose from.

I cant watch TV hardly anymore without seeing a .TV domain...

if you were building a site intended at least partially for mobile use which ones would you consider?

.com
.net
.org
.info
.biz
.ws
.xxx
.asia
.tv
.mobi

Well, which ones do you think are the best choice for a mobile TLD?

obviously .com .net .org because they are well known, but do you really think people would choose .TV or .BIZ over .mobi if the site was intented for mobile use?

niche domains DO work so far... and until you can create your own TLDs you use whichever ones fit the niche your working in.

NOW, the question is "is the mobile industry a viable niche?"

Answer?

Thanks, mjnels ... I read that in the Chat, as well.

Nothing is definitive, of course (somewhere along the way (I stated "see above" in that comment), as a caveat, I mentioned, "in our lifetimes" for instance), that's why it's totally worthy of <Domain Discussion> and in our respective and respectful humble IYHO's!

See you soon.

Why is it whenever I post in a .mobi thread i always get that reaction... "that isnt logical"... "youre talking BS"... blah blah blah...

And your argument is totally not withstanding... It would have reason if the web was a new concept and people were just setting out developing .. But the fact remains is theyre not. Virtually everything that will be wanted on a PDA is already available in a regular web fashion. So your question of - if you were building a site for web use which would you use - is an irrelevence because my point was simply that you could do it in any extension. And my rhetoric was that that fact, and that fact alone, is the extensions biggest threat.
