Hi everybody,

I feel like with NP going much more viral, having more and more signups everyday because of more exposure, it is time to give a very crucial advice to newbies what they should avoid doing, what is a big NO NO as newbie....

#1:

Don't register domain names what are names of big companies....even they drop, even they are available or they are in other tld's or typos of it...you are asking for big problems...

Waiting for your contribs fellas.....

Cheers,

Frank

P.S: if there is a similar thread, Mods please merge it :)

Buy domains based on their commercial value.

Do not buy something just because "they sound cute" or something like that.

Unfortunately I myself cannot fully follow this advice...
Some names are too tempting to reg, even though they have no commercial value -_-

Sure liquidcherry

Company domain names like Toyota, Google etc are a big trap for newbies

Incorporating company names into their domains, like toyota2009.com googleonline.com

People who are new to domaining, never ever register names like this, they are not worth thousands of dollars as you might think, it is only asking for a lawsuit against you. Plus it looks noobish to experienced domainers and lowers your cred to that of a joke. The only people who will buy names like this are other newbies to the domain industry

Dont go blowing your savings or retirement so quickly. Take the time to learn the industry with patience and an open mind.

Too many domainers come into the game, thinking their investments are going to be winners within days. You need to learn the market before you can take advantage of it.

Don't buy domains you realistically can't afford.

Make sure your name is the correct spelling.

Make sure you take advantage of any promotion codes.

Try to fit names with the most suitable extention

Always make sure Numbers and Letters are True i.e 0 or o

Before you buy a name ask yourself. Why am I buying this and what am I planning to do with it

Never pay for an appraisal

Only have names on auto-renew if you want to renew

Before buying, make sure there are no hidden fees.

Check expiry dates of any names before you buy

Never use Paypal for transactions if unsure of the buyer.

Research any buyer before you sell.

Read, read and read more, you never stop learning

Most of all HAVE FUN

Not only should you not pay for an appraisal, you should ignore every appraisal you ever see unless it was from the NP Appraisal section.

If possible then hand reg domain names with somedays gaps in between.

So that next year you won't have a heart attack when renewing them :D

Also prior to registration don't ask people you don't know, that is it a good name? Or you might lose that name and someone else will register it.

That gives me something new to suggest:

If you're a newbie, don't reg anything that's available. There's a 99% chance you're too uneducated to register anything worthy of being resold.

My apologies in advance for this harsh wording that precedes and follows but the point needs to get across because newbies like to think they're better, faster, smarter, more original/creative/unique than the 6 Billion other people out there.

You my friend Mr. Newbie, are not. Take Mellowmasher's advice, read, read, and read. Just when you think you're ready to reg a name, forget that thought and read some more :D

One more is don't go to lousy registrars just to save a penny or two.

It will cost lots of headache later on. So it is not worth it.
