the purpose of a sitemap isn't to "get listed immediately," it's to help crawlers crawl your site the way you want them to... so this thread is a bit misleading...

Well, it depends on the way you look at it.

By submitting your sitemap, google crawlers "crawl" your site much faster. Again, normally it would take around 2 weeks for your site to get indexed. By submitting your site's sitemap, Google crawls it and idexes your site faster.
