| It's time consuming "I know" but I would agree totally with Admans post, analyzing and fine tuning your traffic for optimum CTR is an absolute requirement if you wish to accumulate more revenue from your ads - monitor what works and what doesn't.
I have 11 custom sites which turn over a few grand p/month from PPC, but it's not just AdSense. You may want to look into other ad sources like referral and text link networks, they can be "if not" more lucrative depending on your content and ad placement. Also think about selling your ad locations directly to other companies - create an advertisers page outlining the sizes, locations and pricing, contact them if you feel they could be interested.
Common sense and motivation - is required!
