In the thread you are talking about, the OP did put ccTLDs at the bottom of the list.
Do you really think that extensions like .co.uk or .de are worth less than any other extension ?
Try to understand how things work and don't always believe everything that's written in posts.
Let me take the example of the NHL. Just like many businesses/organizations, their main site is a .com (NHL.com). And the only other extension they have created a specific site for is actually .tv (NHL.tv). There's no site on NHL.net, NHL.org, NHL.mobi, etc.
That says quite a lot...
Speculation can give some short-term value to some domains (for example .mobi), but those probably won't hold any major long-term value.
Only great development by major corporations, organizations, serious developers can really lead to some wonderful sites that will be seen and used by everybody, thus giving some real long-term value to an extension.
That happened to .com and is happening for .tv
