interesting how the debate rages on...

what other ways does MTLD have to pre-qualify someone before looking at an application for a much sought after premium domain? since many people here sday they should find other ways to "charge" or qualify people, what suggestions do you all have? I'm very curious... and who knows, perhaps someone from .mobi is reading this thread right now and we can "inspire" them to implement some of our ideas.

Seriously... what ideas do you all have? how could they have done it better? made it more accessible to the average developer/domainer?

Want to talk about expensive application fees? ICANN has a non-refundable $50,000 fee for filing an application for a new TLD.

Of all the things one could rip on mTLD about, the RFP process and fee shouldn't be one of them. I don't find the RFP application fee to be unreasonable. Yes, it makes it difficult for small time operators to compete, but then again, it's supposed to. For a company with a legitimate business plan for serious development of one of these premium .Mobi properties, spending €500 to have your application seriously considered should be a minor expense in the grand scheme of things.

Hopefully the RFP winners are carefully chosen and qualified. IMHO it would be considerate of them to allow any equally qualified applicants that were inched out on one domain to parlay their application fee onto an alternative domain.

I'm glad they are not making the premium names accessible to the "average domainer" as they would likely just park the name.

The real "test" will be who gets approved for these names and what they do with them. Best case scenario is the names go to big money, with beg advertising plans and budget. Worst case scenario, the names go to some random people with no real budget for dev or advertising, who just wanted to snag a good name on speculation.

as far as I know, doesn't MTLD require those making bids on the premiums to have a clearly defined development timeline that needs to be followed?

very interesting.

PINKY... if you're out there reading this, the quote above is a great suggestion.

that's a win/win situation.

but everyone should keep in mind, there are plenty of great domains in the .mobi aftermarket, not to mention a few gems waiting to be registered. if you sincerely want a premium so you can develop it, then I suggest you register any .mobi that is relevant to that premium and begin development now... that can only help to prove your case when you apply for the premium you want. by the time your premium rolls around for RFP, you may have a fully-developed & profitable .mobi already built. who knows... you may not even need the premium domain after all.

just a bit of advice that i'm following myself.

I aggre with MrRhee,

MLTD is protecting themselves (and .mobi in general) by controlling who gets the premium domains (for example letting serrious companies purchase the top domains and they will be developed). .MOBI will be worth nothing if the premium names are not developed. I think they wanted to keep the very top .mobi names out of the hands of the (quick money making domainers).

Could you imagine if there was no list of the top names, those premium names would just be recycled through the (economy) by companies looking to capitalize quickly on the profits (with no development plans).

This is just my oppinion
