Great post! Wholeheartedly agree. One thing I would add is that many of the old-timers are missing out on a huge trend that is propelling short domains, namely the Asian market, especially China, where internet use is rapidly growing and will continue to grow very fast for the next 5-10 years. This is part of the reason why numeric domains and LLLL's have done a lot better than people expected. I have seen old school domainers complain, who would buy some domain that is full of XQYZ's? Or, who would pay a lot of money for domains that are just some numbers? And they mock and laugh. But they have no clue, because tons of domains with "bad" letters by western standards are actually developed websites already in China, and many more will be over the next 5-10 years, and domains that are just a string of numbers are huge in China as well, like 173.com which sold for over $300k and the two NNNNN's that are in the Alexa Chinese top 100 domains. So, I think a lot of people are just going to be floored when they realize what an impact this has on the values of short domains over the next few years. |
