In regard to the first statement, that is true, but it has been quite a few days. I know that he has been working hard, but the point is that all of our websites are inaccessible. That's lost traffic and lost revenue.

In regard to the second statement, that is completely not true. I don't know what kind of hosts that you have been with in the past, but hours of downtime a day is certainly not normal.

Everything seems to be working now, I'll try to give this a little more time.

WOW it's working!

I feel for you guys/gals, Ive been on a few ups n downs with my previous hosts, it aint fun.

I was surprised to see people actually hosting clients on these accounts, you have no real control over anything, too risky for me.

david.amherst 02-06-2007 09:59 PM

Just out of curiosity, how is this figure calculated? http://www.webhostingstuff.com/uptime/NPServe.html

Is the homepage a different server? If so, then I think that there should be some way to accurately monitor the uptime of the clients' actual websites, because those are the people that the uptime guarantee is being made to.

OttoYiu 02-06-2007 10:07 PM

Webhostingstuff.com's uptime is not based on port test whatsoever. As long as the server pings, it will show its up but far from accurate.

dgridley 02-06-2007 11:31 PM

lol.. sites are working, but can't get into my cpanels now :) Good to see the sites up tho (let's hope they stay up!)

Camron 02-06-2007 11:43 PM

Hi guys,

I have literally not slept for awhile, trying to get everything stable. My systemadmins are looking at this attack, and said this is one of the biggest ones they have seen in their career (from the datacenter).

I understand uptime is important, I am taking as much of a loss as anyone else is here. I am working very hard to make sure everyone is up and running, but when these attackers attack from spoof ips, (around 30k of them) our server stops responding and since their all different ips (don't ask me how, I have absolutely no idea how they are doing it) they get right past the firewall.

I am on the phone with the datacenter devising a plan on how to stop these attacks for good, however at the rate these attacks come in (different ips/etc) we are working the best we can on keeping the server steady.

I completely agree on anyone who is leaving, as I am not denying that these downtimes are unreal. As shown above, yes webhostingstuff reports 100% uptime only because it shows rates by pings, not by certain ports. As the server has technically been online (only apache ddos) the reports will show 100% unless the server actually goes down (as in, its entirety).

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. I am currently swamped with pm's and answering questions so please do not expect to get the quick response as usual.

Thanks again for all who are sticking around,
Camron

Camron, everything seems to be working 100% at the moment.. I realize it's not your fault and these things could happen on any host.. good luck on getting things back to normal!

Thanks Dave for your support. I am now working on basic security of the server (disabling insecure php permissions, etc). Please let me know if you see any difference in anyones scripts or if they react differently, as I am putting on some heavy security right now.

WPGeek 02-07-2007 12:33 AM

I am staying with this host, because as dav3.us said it could happen to any host. Thanks for update Camron.

Thanks, I will keep everyone updated. Sorry for the late replys to anyones PM's, I am working as best I can :)

I am now banning all ips that have 500+ requests or more (as this is obviously not normal). If for any reason your ip (as an NPServe customer) gets blocked, PM me with your IP, and check your browser settings as 500+ requests is not normal, and your firefox/IE settings are way to high (as this is counted as a ddos attacks).

Thanks,
Camron

mtorregiani 02-07-2007 05:19 AM

Yes, it's working now.
Thanks for your effort Camron. Rep Added.

YesBrilliant 02-07-2007 09:12 AM

Working here.

Fine and Fast!

Thanks!

asianinvasion 02-07-2007 08:34 PM

It looks like shell_exec() is now disabled, which is preventing my script from working properly...

W-M 02-07-2007 09:30 PM

Here is what Camron told me so I hope he can get it back up and going.

all working here, thanks.

dgridley 02-07-2007 09:33 PM

Working great and hopefully it stays that way.. I lost quite a bit of revenue while it was acting up!

I am now unable to login to my admin panel, which is a PHP script. Firefox returns the page as a download. I don't know what would be causing that, but it has always worked before.

Good chance your script is trying to access a php function which has been disabled. You should ask the developer which php modules it needs, as I believe you can activate them in your .htaccess. We disabled a few of them as it is a risk to other users (shell_exec, etc).

Yes, we have disabled it because this php function can cause a major risk to everyone on the server.

Revenue sites???

No offence intended Dave but if you lost alot $XXX of revenue you might be better off with some of Camron's other hosting solutions. I don't think his VPS service was affected by the DoS attacks. I believe just everyone on the shared account got toasted.

If my sites start making anywhere near $XX per day I move them off shared hosting.

Some shared hosting advice to everyone.
