| It helps resellers yes - when opening it up. But it hurts others doing commercial business on the domain space. I would like to believe that the major corporations doing business in Canada have wisely looked over their marketing/advertising projections when buying .ca domains. They know Canadians identify with their own cctld and that's why they so readily use it in this market. The trust factor is there in spades in this country.
The biggest users of .ca domains for 'outside the box' uses are the car companies. I couldn't even count all the different .ca domains they are using for their products. They use them for short-term marketing campaigns, promotions and contests. Car companies are usually pretty good at being early-adapters to a market and this correlates directly to their ready uptake of the .ca domain for this market.
I also have never seen any hard numbers but I would surmise most Canadians if asked would say a .ca is for Canadians only. As time goes by that number of course would only get higher.
Keep it closed - and besides - the .ca is bringing better and better prices each month without having it opened up. Sure it's slower than it would be otherwise, but the potential benefit does not outweigh the risks imo. I'd rather earn less on reselling and earn more on development, as that's where the real money is anyways.
