In this case, I think it would make more sense to use a GIF -- you wouldn't have any semi-transparent areas this way, which is why PNGs are used most. If you need more quality (257+ colors) with transparency for whatever reason, use a PNG.

Still a nice find.

Semi-transparent PNGs work with a piece of Javascript, I believe.
