Dreamhost

Reviews and information for Dreamhost

This company is not a very good registrar, however good hosting, they do not have a free domain push option in the control panel and their prices are a little too high for my liking

EDIT: Hacked, eww.

obvio 05-25-2006 08:13 PM

What do you like about their hosting? They have their own control panel that is not nearly as good as say cpanel for example.

Great host overall

A few of my friends use dreamhost, and so it came highly recommended. Dreamhost can survive a digg front page no problem. Don't know about a slashdotting, but I am guessing it could. Anyway, as long as you find a discount code, dreamhost is very cheap for the normal user. They have free private domain registration, 1 click installs of forums, blogs and other applications, support that responds in 1 business day, a control panel that is very feature rich, growing bandwidth and space (increases per week), and many other great functions.

The only thing that bothered me a bit is when you first sign up you have to send a fax of your credit card information into them to be approved. However, for me, I was approved witin like 15min so it turned out not to be that much of a hassle.

Unlimited almost everything, Very Good.

Except space and bandwidth, but most could live with 20Gb and 1Tb and growing for $7.95/month. Cheaper if you have a coupon code. Unlimited domains, subdomains, mail. no perceptible downtime, quick hosting, panel a bit slow loading but very serviceable. refferal scheme could be a winner. One click installs etc. Cost me $22.40 for a year, search around.

Hosting I hear is good. Do not think I would buy a domain name

Lots of space, bandwidth - cheap

Recently signed up with them. The control panel they use can be slow to load at times but overall I think they offer a lot - easy to manage unlimited domains from one spot. Lots of space (20 GB) and bandwidth (1TB = 1000 GB) too.

Added: I've been getting some errors when publishing.

My problems were resolved. They have good customer service.

Use the code "manic" without quotes, it will waive the setup fee when paying monthly or give a $79.40 discount off any plan when paid for a full year..

I have been using DH for a little over a year and overall have been very happy with them. They can be a little slow on tech support, but the majority of questions a person would have are answered in the wiki or forums. They recently had some problems with downtime from power failures at the data center but those should be a thing of the past..

I have noticed minor slow loads in the panel at times, but not very often.. The panel has alot of features you won't find in cpanel etc..

Until recently I would have never considered using them as a registrar without using them for hosting also, but they offer free whois privacy now..

I had a few problems yesterday but they fixed it fast. I just hope it doesn't repeat often. My experience with customer service was very good.

the code MDDR deducts $90 from annuals. That really makes their Code Monster a steal.

vokkerzen 08-10-2006 04:00 PM

Thanks for code

Review

Uses the float concept, offering more than they can provide in hopes of breaking even in the end. If they don't break even at the end of the month its all the hosting customers who will suffer when they close down w/no refunds. not suggested

vokkerzen 08-14-2006 05:21 AM

What is float concept?

apexad 09-18-2006 01:00 AM

The code 'cheapevenmoney' (without the quotes) gives REALLY GOOD discounts and makes it even money on any option you could select. Try it, check the price, if you like it, buy it.

I've had them form a couple of months now, and yeah, they claim to be having server problems, but my site has only gone down once for about an hour, as far as I can tell.

Nice features, pricing reasonable.

DreamHost started offering free WHOIS privacy which is a nice feature. I do think however, that you need a hosting plan to have full DNS control though. Their interface is quite simple and easy to navigate. Their customer service is usually fast - usually a few hours during business hours to receive a response. Their pricing is reasonable ($9.95), but I don't think I'll be using them for domains other than the credits I receive from buying hosting from them.

When I signed up for Dreamhost, I used the code MAXIMUMOFFER, which takes off $97 or the maximum on any plan, so I was really happy :) I could buy a plan for a year and pay only $22 or so dollars for 200GB (though, you have toe realize they are overselling quite a bit).

obvio 10-27-2006 03:11 PM

What happens if someone refers a client to Dreamhost via an affiliate link AND they also use that discount code. Does not Dreamhost lose approx. $100 in that deal? That can't be a good business plan.

The discount amount of the code is deducted from the creator's referral $.
If someone uses an affiliate link AND a promo code, then the creator of the code will get the money (unless his or her code deducts the maximum $97.) Unfortunately, the person whose affiliate link was used will receive zilch.

i've been using there hosting for awhile. They're good.

Borghunter 10-28-2006 11:34 AM

Yes, their hosting is good, I have 200GB and 2TB BW, awesome!

sleepysentry 10-28-2006 06:24 PM

Dreamhost's hosting is NOT good in my opinion.
1. From my experience, uptime has been less than desirable.
2. MYSQL runs very slow.
3. They oversell like crazy.
4. Very slow support, even for simple issues.
5. Way before you get their 1 TB of bandwidth, they'll shut you down for using too many server resources.

I have been using them for over 6 months by the way so I feel I can give an honest opinion about them.

stscac 10-28-2006 08:47 PM

Sometimes its slow, but most of the time its great.

Get what you pay for.

I just bought another domain through dreamhost. I think at some point I will move all my domains to them. It just seems easier to have it all in one place, and why not have it be dreamhost.

ecsportal 12-01-2006 02:41 AM

Coupon Code: SRVR97
Will deduct $97.00... We bought a year with 200GB Disk Space and 2TB transfer/month with a free domain and it costed us $20.00 for the year. So far the experience has been great despite the previous reviews I had read. Good people.

Signed up with Dreamhost less than $25.00/yr. We received a free domain and all of our support requests have been answered quickly. I really like the way they make you feel like you have a say. The voting in their interface for new options/additional changes and things like that were very impressive. We had previously used HostGator and Netfirms and so far, much happier with Dreamhost.
