.tv 101/.tv developers hot list

We have had the .tv forum now for 8 months, it has evolved into being thee place on the internet to discuss .tv domains, and has been by bar the greatest source of info. In fact DOT TV corp has learned things form this thread, so thanks to all who contribute here and make this place a great place.

.tv basics

1) Proper selection

you have to be more spot on on .tv then other exts, If you think you have to have a name that goes with the .info ext then you really have to with the .tv. Ratio for non premium names is 4 to 1 Reg fee .com $7 Reg Fee .tv $30 SO when you buy a .tv it comparable to regging 4.coms. SO if you mess up with a .tv name it would be like 4 bad .com regs. For Newbies looking at .tv and getting interested UNDERSTAND THIS be careful you will not sell a .tv to another DOMAINER in 99.9% of the time. FIRST off the % of DOMAINERS that like and or Understand .tv is far less than that of .com. Do not buy a name just because you like the sound, think it through;
a) WHAT are the uses of this name in development ?
b) WHO are the realistic possible end users ?
c) Do I know how to contact them ?
d) You will Not be able to put up for sale in Auction and get your full money back.
e) Do you have the budget to renew each year if you are just holding for
investment.

2) Development non Premium Names/Generics
If you are not going to develop a domain in the .tv ext it probably is not worth buying. Example a name like FunnyShow.tv may go with the extension and you may decide you are not going to develop it and just wait for an end user to come along. In the .tv end user field these tend to be large entertainment and broadcast companies. THey will have the budget to get the Premium generic Category leader. They have the budget to buy Comedy.tv

If you develop it you got into the same industry without the big money outlay and are ahead of the game. So while I think we have a lot of names getting regged here that technically " go with the ext" They need to be developed, there is no sense in regging 30 of them. That is $900 a year in reg fees for names that will have low demand end user wise and very little if any PPC.

3) Premium Domains
Do not always dismiss the notion about premium domains $500 is a lot I agree and if you only going to own 1 or 2 .tv then it makes sense to avoid them. But many will reg 15 to 30 non premiums that unless they have development plans for might be better going with 1 or 2 premium .tvs ( there are a few tricks in saving some $ when regging premiums. I do not mean getting a discount from emailing .tv they are not given on the $500 names, just send a pm if needed)
Premium .tvs do get traffic ask JOHNTV, ELequa, MrsJello to name a few.

4) Have a game plan
Before you reg know exactly what you want to do with the domain, see the site built and all it would include then reg the domain.
Four things to do with a domain :

FLIP IT and doubtful you will with a .tv
PPC IT
DEVELOP IT
INVESTMENT waiting for end user (Premium or Generic)

Try to pick names that are intuitive to the .tv extension sweatsocks.tv is not a good name no matter how much overture or google.

We may be close to having .tv regs avail on NP RJ and I working on this right now and we may get a np logo with a link to this thread on www.tv

Thank you .tvers

Saving more money regging premiums

Whether it be $100 or $500 here is the way to reg a premium and save money

go to www.tv check a name inter.tv avail click continue

Now hit back button

A pop up comes up with a discount code good for 10 % off valid for 1 day
(note if you have a pop up blocker you will not get code)

Write down code

GO back enter name inter.tv available

Click continue

PIck two years instead of 1 *You have to pay for two years no matter what even if you sold Name the next day. By picking 2 you save 15%

Inter.tv 2 years at $100 per year $200 less 15% $170 now you apply your code get an extra 10 % $17

Total cost $153

If you have a pop up blocker pm before you going to reg and I will go to www.tv and put in back out and get code for you

You can see with $500 this can really add up $500 less 15% less 10%
So instead of paying $1000 for 2 years registration it would be $765

Hope this helped

Cheers Eq, good to see that the resources for .tv development are going from strength to strength. It amazes me the way things have moved forward since even a year ago.

Great work with the forum development by the way!

I need to get back at it...

This is great!
Thank you very much for sharing. You have Good Karma.
Brightcove is still "developing" their affiliate model (last checked a month ago).
If anyone sees one with an affiliate set-up which is active, before I do, please post it.

Thank you :)

.tv website designer???

I know this is a .mobi link, but you owe it to yourself to watch the designer tutorial if you havent already.

http://www.mobisitegalore.com/

This site gives you a free web design template which can build you a website to .mobi specs, and its free. They also have tools to get your current site to .mobi spec.

1. You might have a .tv that you want to double up with for .mobi
2. After watching this I feel better about .mobi and how it can help .tv as the awareness of the new .mobi extension will help general awareness of WEB 2.0 and the .tv. I think both are going to do quite well now.
3.mobi has certain specs different from other ext. and it appears that mobile phones might make the .mobi a default browser setting, which might be a good argument for doubling up your good .tv names with a .mobi

The reason im posting this is because we need more sites like this for .tv design, something quick and fast and easy.

Yes I know Brightcove and KickApps, but we need more...this is a perfect example of a potenital .tv business. Something simple yet quick and fast and useful.

Hopefully Demands tools will allow us to do this...

Examples of Effective Use of ADBRITE? ? ? ?

Can anyone show some examples of a website integrating adbrite tools ? I'd like to see how it works when customized etc. Any thoughts from anyone using the system. How easy is it to get the pictures up. I noticed that the tutorial was not functional.

Thanks

.TV rocks!

the best CMS systems

we forgot to add the best free content managment systems available on the web... http://www.wordpress.org and http://www.joomla.org

you can set up your site in a day and both offer awesome functionality with complete customization possible.

you can embed videos from any source imaginable e.g. youtube.

however, what remains to be seen is a free php-based extension that can make a video submission system like portlandmaine.tv has.

chaitanyagoa 07-21-2007 08:27 AM

great forum guys...
keep up the good work

ellisd 08-08-2007 08:12 AM

Excellent information, Thanks for all the good information :)

TheBulldog 08-08-2007 10:11 AM

I was using Joomla......I am switching over to e107. Instead of hunting for packages and going through some of the painful learning curves, e107 has almost all you could think of built in from the start.

on!SPOT 08-08-2007 11:16 AM

last time i checked with e107 i had troubles finding support and help files,
besides that it was clear that e107 has many impressice feautures

TheBulldog 08-08-2007 11:22 AM

You may want to check again. I have been using it with no problems lately on version 0.7.8

try e107.org for any help you need.

I think portlandmaine.tv is running the following script:

http://www.buyscripts.in/youtube_clone.html

Seems OK, but lacks ability to post content from YouTube or others.
So only good if you want to host videos yourself - and have cheap bandwidth. :$:

Excellent saying! Sam Walton used to say: It's not what you drive; it's how you're driven.
