It's a bit far fetched to say that it would ever becoem the second best. The original extensions have had time to mature and develop naturally whereas .EU was released through Landrush.
No domain extension which is highly speculated will overtake .COM or .NET, and I'm willing to place a wager on that! Simpky because it has not had the natural start that the orinal ones received.
