Nodes are a changing part of a IP address, but it is more complex than that. Here are the public IP ranges and the amount of combinations; A class: 10.x.x.x (16777216 combinations) B class: 174.n.x.x (65536 combinations) C class: 192.n.n.x (256 combinations)* (* You count the number ‘0’ as a node too!) They are called private IP addresses because you can use each node as static IP address as part of a intranet, and they cannot be used for x = Changeable node n = static IP 10.x.x.x is a class a public IP address range, and here are 5 nodes; 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.3 10.0.0.4 10.0.0.5 But it has about 65 million combinations 174.x.x.x is a class b and it only has 2 space IP ranges, so that 174.12.0.1 and 174.0.0.1 are different, but 174.0.1.0 is the same as the last node and the same for 192.x.x.x, but it only has 1 space IP range, so it only has 256 combinations And each numbers represents a binary '00010101', but they formed like IP addresses to look neater It would be funny typing this into your browser wouldn’t it? 001100010011000100110001. 001100010011000100110001. 001100010011000100110001. 001100010011000100110001 Translates to; (111.111.111.111) |
correction: class B starts at 174 and C at 192, but this does not mean the first 8 bits (first part preceeding the dot) are fixed. |
