From ugly to $1 million, guy wants to trade up his ugly domain name

I just saw this on digg and wanted some perspective. This guy wants to trade up his oneuglydomain.com for a more "beautiful" one worth $1 million. It's like that oneredpaperclip idea, but with domains.

My question is, does he have a chance or is this just a parody? I have a couple of dead domains I wouldn't mind trading for if I can feed off the publicity this might generate.

Thoughts?

CelebrityAffairs.com was getting around 10-12 uniques a month on average while parked at Sedo over the past year. After it was listed for trade on OneUglyDomain.com it went up to 2-3 uniques per day, so it was getting a little exposure.

I don't think any winning domains / domains on offer are going to be getting many clicks at this stage because the site is barely receiving any visitors. Do the math, 4000 visitors in approx. 60 days, that's less than 100 visitors a day. So much for the publicity the winning domains and domains on offer get...if he doesn't start getting some serious publicity for oneuglydomain, this is doomed.

The idea was born to die. He wouldn't get that elusive million-dollar domain no matter how hard he worked -- he's wasting his time.

Heh, I went ahead and offered a couple of domains, and I will tell you why. I think it is a pretty clever way to scrounge up traffic/interest, and I always enjoy seeing people peek outside the box for an answer.

I suppose, if it is successful, we will then see a rash of "twouglydomains dot com" "onebeautifuldomain dot com" etc regs, lol.

Well no matter what happens he's already traded oneuglydomain.net (reg fee) up to CelebrityAffairs.com (At least mid xx) so I think it's a success.

The whole premise really relies on how much interest in the site he gets. The more interest, the better domains offered and the more traffic for all the names.

Even if you think the idea is going to fail, you have to admit, most of us wish we would've thought of this. If you owned celebrityaffairs.com, would you EVER trade it to someone who was offereing OneUglyDomain.Net? If for some reason, the site failed right now, he would still own a domain that is 1000x better than his original. This may not be the next MDHP, but its certainly better than anything I'm doing.

yeah, and not many people are voting because he's requiring you to confirm your vote via e-mail which is a just a pain in the a$$. although i suppose the electronic voting machines these past few days in the US were worse...

I was nice enough to cast a vote for the last one but I didn't feel like confirming my vote. When a person's busy, anything can be a pain. I didn't have the desire to go in and confirm my vote so I let it die.

I had this idea weeks ago and i don't think it will work. Oneredpaperclip have a clear goal and its a genuine idea. This reminds me of all the copycats of Milliondollarhomepage. Where are they now?

If a regular geek-off-the-street hears of an idea that has made millions (well, singular or plural), he'll try it, hoping to milk the Internet cash cow dry. Some ideas work (Long ago, someone thought, "Let's make a site that shows ppl having sex!" THAT idea, ethical or not, grew to be a billion-dollar industry) but not all. I think there must be at least 1,000 -- no hyperbole -- or more 'pixel' sites online. All 'copycats' combined might not have a full $500.

I remember when the "pay me a buck" sites were hot... go to 'em and donate a dollar just-because. All copycat sites might not have made $50 combined.

It's rare to find a genuine idea these days so I'll give the creator credit. But it sounds too unrealistic a goal unless he has 20-50 years to put aside. And yes, $1,000,000 isn't small but it's not as much money as you think. Ya can't even retire on it unless you live a small, boorish life & plan on a similar retirement.

OFF TOPIC WARNING: Let's say you invested the entire $1,000,000 wisely and made a low 4% interest on it yearly. $40,000 a year is plenty for me to retire on happily. Of course, I live in Alabama. $40,000 a year ain't jack in cities like LA or NYC.

Exactly, I don't even make 40k a year now. If I did, it'd be like an entirely new lifestyle for me

I'd easily retire if I was making 40k a year in interest. Though my wife would still have to work, don't think she'd be too happy.

Some can make it on a million and some can't -- there are factors, yes ie medical help, area of living, etc. A million can get you farther, yes -- again, there are just factors

I don't think he's planning on retiring if he hits the million because it simply wouldn't be enough if you factor in inflation and his age. Regardless, if he makes $1 million for the amount of work he's doing, I'm quitting my job and starting a portfolio of "crazy" ideas on the net until I hit the jackpot.
