Mass Snail-Mailings

What are the laws in the US regarding sending out mass mailings (snail mail)? Do advertisers need permits to send out unsolicited promos? Just curious if anybody knows, or has successfully promoted any affiliate programs by mail.

Thanks in advance.

No, it is not illegal and you do not need any special permit to send out snail mail ads. Anyone can do it if they have the money to pay for it. If you needed a special permit there would not be so much junk mail, especially in the biz opp category.

Nope, you don't need a special permit. Send away.

In fact, the US Postal service has an excellent online service called NetPost for sending bulk snail mail. Just upload your mailing list with your document(s) and they'll print and mail it for you.

I've used the sevice a couple times to send letters to potential customers and was very pleased with the service.

As others have stated, you may mail out as many pieces as you wish with no limit, except for the fact that it obviously must be of legal content. No permits or permissions are needed.

I have been doing direct mailings for over two decades in other ventures. I will be experimenting with selling domains via direct mail soon...

I wish you well on that Gene, that's something I've been thinking of trying for awhile. Please let me know how it goes.

I'll keep you posted. I'm thinking of rounding up a cooperative effort to share the costs among a dozen or more domainers. Imagine a mailing that contains a listing of a few dozen domains for sale (two or three domains from each participant). That way, a postcard mailing piece only costs a few pennies for each participant. For around $30 per person, we can mail 1,000 postcards (includes printing, postage, design, etc). I will finalize the details and advertise it on NamePros soon to see if there is enough interest...

Wow, thanks for the information! I had no idea the post office offered such a service.

So I imagine mailings for forex, electronics, and dvds would be legal. But what about online poker? I see billboards for casinos all the time, since I live by the Mississippi. Would the legality vary based on what state you send it to?
