developing a website.....
 

as a newbie, my question is when you guys develop a website....how do you usually go about promoting it? getting visitors. I've already listed a site via free submission, what are the best ways to get people to your website?

Find other sites like yours and offer to trade links.
Spam in AIM chat rooms.
Post signs around your school :kickass: hey it works! lol
Have friends tell friends.

Many others.. but too many to list ;)

Or Spam Yahoo! Chatrooms. I also found out that if you make a yahoogroup You will get nice hits. Free advertising.

Go to related forums, participate in the forum, have your site in your signature.

The most post you post in those related forums, your signature will expose to more people.

If your budget allows it, advertising with Google Adwords and Overture.Com is an excellent way to purchase targeted traffic.

Other methods may depend on your type of website. Offering an affiliate program is a good method of getting visitors if you sell a product.

Agreed except don't offer to do a cross link unless you're asked to. Some people will be happy to provide you with a link and it's better for you not to return the link (in terms of pagerank leakage). You can accomplish the same thing using a .php?id= to redirect outbound links.

Also go and submit your site to as many dmoz.org categories as you can think of following their submission guidelines.

DMOZ is also good for finding related sites and leads on who will link to you.
